An Adventure in Awakened Living

From the forthcoming book
Power and Grace: An Adventure in Awakened Living
by Irish Author Mick Quinn

Often we declare a desire to change with great gusto and conviction, but may find that within a few days or weeks that enthusiasm (root: God within) to change has almost completely dissipated. Why is this so? How can we make change permanent?

The core of the issue is that, although our intentions are good, the way in which we direct them is subject to both individual and collective conditioning; hence, even the purest ideas become corrupted and lead us pretty much back to where we started. An intention is the anticipated outcome envisioned in the mind. Our values help us select and then guide our intentions. The dilemma is that our values and the way we use them are the domain of ego, and because of this, lasting transformation is difficult, if not impossible.

The most humble of wishes would be to end all unnecessary suffering, also known as freedom. We will look at how this potential exists within your free will and how, when you are clear about your values, you can create a direct link between your intentions and your destiny. In this way your intentions become manifest in your future.

To stabilize the conditions for your wonderful resolutions to “stick” you must reclaim consciousness that will otherwise be consumed in a continuous struggle with ego-based outcomes. Liberation from the effects of hand-me-down values, upon which you base your decision-making, is the outcome when those values are rearranged into one conscious group, where the primary value supports and guides your intention to be free from suffering.

The primary value that you select for this single hierarchy always represents that your interest in awakening is marginally greater than all others. Making decisions based on such a conscious primary principle will produce an enlightened effect. This new arrangement also supports all other necessary aspects of living, since subsequent values can include money, security, family, love, creativity, and learning.

An awakened person’s life is centered on a clear, single hierarchy of values, and when asked, she could instantly identify her primary value. She may, however, have some difficulty determining what her second and third values are, as these will vary from choice to choice. Her primary value, however, will be consistent with freedom from conditioning, and significant choices made in her day-to-day life will give consistent and tangible proof of this arrangement.

For example: To sustain the conditions for transformation, consider placing a primary value such as completion, freedom, or fulfillment over and above all other values on a single hierarchy that is to represent your life from that moment forward. Making a major life decision according to a primary value of completion delivers an outcome of completion regardless of the circumstances surrounding that choice. Freedom is not dependent on the circumstances, options or outcomes, but on how consistently your pure intentions are directed by a related value that supports such an objective.

Conditioning segregates values into distinct and concurrent groups related to career, home, family, friends, and so on, in its futile attempt to manipulate reality. You may realize that you also have a “wish list” of values that includes valiant attributes such as integrity, perfection and creativity. The struggle with most major life decisions and their outcomes is the consequence of numerous “ego-guiding principles”. Not only does each group of values have its own agenda, but each hierarchy has its own presiding primary value. This arrangement ensures that the ego remains in firm control of your life force and fortune.

Because most of us are not aware of the multiple groups of values, we experience great anguish and confusion in times of making important choices. “Not knowing what to do” is a clear manifestation that the ego is entrenched in values. An awakened person can make major life decisions in a matter of seconds with no worries, regrets or fears that options may need to be “revised”.

Stressing over choices is a reflection of conditioning as it drains consciousness with compelling and conflicting narcissistic alternatives. The ego controls your decision-making process by selecting the most important values from these multiple and conflicting groups and then it lets you “duke” it out! In this way the ego can easily orchestrate your actions—and your fate—as you “weigh up the options,” “consider all the scenarios,” or look to the past for patterns. Whatever the original intention was, it is now lost, the outcome is conditioned, and lasting changes never seem to “stick.”

The ego also uses the battle for attention between all these values to drain your consciousness—in the present moment with deliberation—and in the future because of the conditioned outcomes you have to “overcome”. The continued existence of these multiple groups of values precludes you from being able to discover and express your full potential by setting and following through on noble resolutions.

As you awaken, it will become apparent how the first big decision you ever made—independently of your parents—was based on the existence of multiple groups of values, the result of conditioned intention and a product of the ego. You may also realize that you have been doing this pretty much ever since.

Margaret was the quintessential grandmother. She was sweet, kind, and caring. Margaret was also quite independent and lively. Now in her early seventies, she loved to go to spiritual retreats as she awakened in her wisdom years. She always paid attention, asked great questions, and expressed a genuine interest in awakening to her full potential. In the morning session of the last day of such a retreat. Margaret stated categorically that her number one value was family, and from her grandmotherly stories, her classmates had no reason to doubt her. The teacher then asked her, “Is family your number one value, or are you the number one value of your family?” As Margaret fell silent, she looked perplexed and anxious, and for the very first time in the retreat she did not respond. At the beginning of the afternoon session, Margaret was not in her usual place. When the teacher enquired as to her whereabouts he was told, “She had to leave on a personal matter.”

“Awakening to Values, Intentions, and Destiny” was adapted from the soon-to-be-published book Power and Grace - An Adventure in Awakened Living by Irish author Mick Quinn. A native of Ireland, Mick has lectured to thousands nationwide and has received press attention from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. David Holmgren is co-originator (with Bill Mollison) of the permaculture concept and author of the recent book David Holmgren is co-originator (with Bill Mollison) of the permaculture concept and author of the recent book, PERMACULTURE: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability. He talks about the need to move beyond the lulling hope that ‘green tech’ breakthroughs will allow world-wide ’sustainable consumption’ to the recognition that dwindling oil supplies inevitably mean a mandatory ‘energy descent’ for human civilization across the planet. He argues that permaculture principles provide the best guide to a peaceful societal ‘powering down."

The Golden Years

The Golden Years

More Baby Boomers go tanning than you would think.

By Galia Ozari

Missing those bygone days of summer loving, Baby Boomers may be seeking to reclaim their youth indoors—at tanning salons, says research coming out of Philadelphia’s Fox Chase Cancer Center.

The study, which included data from in-home interviews of 29,394 adults in 2005, found that twice as many young people use indoor tanning facilities, with 1 in 5 (or 20 percent) of those ages 18 to 29 reporting usage, versus 1 in 10 adults between 50 and 64. The data, which was collected as part of the annual National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), was published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Research was supported by grants from the National Cancer Institute.

"Our results are concerning, especially given the increasing rates of skin cancer, including the deadliest form–melanoma," said Carolyn J. Heckman, Ph.D., a behavioral researcher at Fox Chase, in a public statement. "Ninety percent of all skin cancers are thought to be associated with ultraviolet radiation, which is emitted during indoor tanning. There is a myth that indoor tanning is safer than sunbathing, but this is not the case."
Indoor tanning declined with increasing age from a high of 20 percent among 18-29 year olds to 8 percent among those 65 years of age and older (17 percent among 30- to 39-year-olds, 14 percent among those aged 40 to 49, 10 percent among those 50 to 64). Females were more likely to report indoor tanning, though the division by sex was not as great among older adults (age 18-29, 13 percent male and 27 percent female vs. age 65+, 8 percent male and 7 percent female).
"We conducted these analyses because we know little about the prevalence and correlates of indoor tanning among adults," said Heckman. "Most prior studies have targeted adolescents and young adults. This is the largest study to date investigating indoor tanning in a cohort extending throughout adulthood and we were surprised by how many older adults visit tanning facilities. This is further evidence of the expanding popularity of indoor tanning despite the increased risks for skin cancer."
Some people think that creating a “base tan” at a salon will protect them from sunburn. Not the case, says the research, even for those over age 50. Data indicated that individuals who tanned indoors actually suffered from more sunburns over the past year and failed to take basic sun safe precautions, whether they were under or over 50.
What could be driving people, especially older cohorts, to engage in this potentially harmful practice? Are Boomers seeking to emulate the Charlie’s Angel or perfect 10 of yesteryear? It could be that curvy cultural icons Farrah Fawcett and Bo Derek, as well as other sexy Boomers, live on in the nostalgia of golden tans.

“Baby Boomers want to be Boomer babes and tanning is in their history—before it became medically unsound,” author and radio host Debbie Mandel, M.A. says. “Tanning makes a woman look younger and hides indiscretions like cellulite better. Boomers are redefining aging with exercise, aesthetic procedures and cosmetic surgery.”

Compared to surgical cosmetic procedures, Boomers may view tanning as cheaper and easier. “Tanning is a relatively benign method which is youth enhancing. Many believe that tanning salons are safe, but this is a fallacy,” Mandel, author of Turn On Your Inner Light, says.

In addition to the health dangers, Mandel says, it is important to note that insecurities are driving Boomers, especially women, to tan. “The problem with any of these youth enhancing procedures (other than exercise), is that older women feel insecure, competitive and unhappy with their role in society,” Mandel, who is also a stress management experts, tells demo dirt.

“Beauty is all about vitality, positivism and confidence—inside out,” Mandel says. “Tanning is a cover up for a woman who is uncomfortable with her own skin!”

Hi Boomers Need more in your Life

New to The Boomer Group

Boomers Bank http://blog.ira-401k-realestate.com

July 8th, 2008

I am new to The Boomer Group and my responsibility is to find those enlightened companies who realize the value of the baby boomer generation and are looking for experienced office professionals.

If you happen to be generation X or Y and have found your way to this site, do not for a moment think that I am disparaging your business abilities or commitment.  We have simply choosen to focus on a very special niche.

Boomers do not seem to be exiting the job market at the rate once projected.  In his book, Working, Studs Terkel stated that we go to work each day, not only for ”daily bread”, but for “daily meaning”.  There is great reward, not only financially, but mentally and physically, from continuing to work.  Boomer’s offer expertise, good health, a strong work ethic, knowledge and maturity.  All are traits that successful businesses value.

Many boomers are looking for a more “meaningful” career.  The questions we need to ask are:  What kind of work would I like to do?  What transferable skills do I have?  Can I contribute to a company’s success?

In looking at a career change, uncertainty will not serve us well.  Creating a plan for what we want to accomplish, the value we bring and how a prospective employer will profit from having us as a member of their team, will have a lot to do with the success of our search.

In writing this, I hope that someone, or a great many someone’s, will read it and respond.  Even better, numerous companies will seek out The Boomer Group, with positions that need to be filled.

In reality, I hope you will share the name, The Boomer Group, with any individual or business that can profit from the services we offer.

I am Ray Clapper, responsible for business development at The Boomer Group and I would like to hear from you about what type of services or support you need in preparing for your next career.

Over Qualified = You didn’t sell your Value

December 5th, 2007

Sometimes when we hear from people that they were not hired for the job, it is true that they may be ‘over qualified’.  If you are applying for a job and are seeking a position that is 10-30k lower than what you used to make, then the hiring manager may be wise to be cautious.  However, if you are seeking a new job, in a different industry, or purposely taking a step back, then you have to really be able to articulate your value to the new employer.

The beauty of wisdom, is that you have the knowledge and confidence to change the dynamic of an interview.  Instead of just answering the same questions the same way, try to interrupt the pattern of your interviewer.  Ask him/her ‘What are your goals for this department?’, ’What keeps him/her up at night’?;  ‘What is the role of this department as it relates to the company?’ ‘How would you define the perfect candidate for this position?”.  Once you have identified the pain of the department or this manager….be the solution!  A younger candidate will simply not have the business acumen, experience, and skills you have!  Yes, some managers can and will be threatened by your experience, however you probably wouldn’t want to work for someone who is scared of hiring someone ‘too strong’.  The best and brightest hiring managers know the golden rule of hiring “Always hire people smarter than you are!”

Our Inagural Blog

Hi Boomers:

October 1, 2007.  We’re excited to start a blog to capture your thoughts and opinions about being a Boomer and finding work.  We have had the pleasure and the experience of placing almost 1600 Baby Boomers in the Denver Market since our inception in 2004.

When we started The Boomer Group we were a bit early to the party, but now many employers are seeing the value of having more diverse and mature employees.  We have learned many lessons over the years. One of our biggest lessons is that the Boomer demographic can not be simplified, categorized or stereotyped as ‘one type of person’.  We have clearly seen that there are at least two groups within the big group.  Boomers who are 40ish to 50ish; and those 50+ (and Fabulous).  In addition, we don’t think that all Boomers will be retiring en mass, as the media would have us all believe.  We meet many Boomers who have no intention of retiring simply becuase they need the emotional and financial support that most get from work.   The key moving forward will be for employers to evaluate how their work should be completed and be willing to creatively structure work to accomodate more flexible work arrangements.

Have you ever felt like the media, employers or certain consumer industries have misunderstood you as a Boomer?
